How to Answer 'What Are Your Salary Expectations?' (From an HR Manager)
Written by a former HR manager
I've asked this question thousands of times. Here's what's happening on the other side: the recruiter has a budget band, and they want to know if you're inside it and how much room there is. Your goal is to avoid anchoring low without seeming difficult.
Step 1: Ask for the range first
"I'm flexible and more focused on the overall fit. Could you share the budgeted range for this role?" Many recruiters will simply tell you, and in a growing number of US states and cities, pay ranges must be disclosed in the posting.
Step 2: If they insist, give a researched number
"Based on my research for similar roles in this market and my experience with X, I'm targeting around $95,000 in base salary, though I'm looking at the total package."
- Use one number, not a range. If you say "$85โ95k", you'll be offered $85k.
- Aim for the upper part of the market range you found, not the middle.
- Say "base salary" so bonus and benefits stay negotiable.
On an online form that requires a number
Enter your researched target. Avoid "0" or "999999" โ some systems auto-reject those.
If your number is above their range
You'll usually hear it right away. You can respond: "Thanks for being transparent. Is there flexibility in sign-on bonus, title level, or a six-month review?"
